OSCAR 2011

Posted on 9:27 AM by Unknown

Some OSCAR notes:

The show was consistently interesting, never boring, but never really exciting either. A few lines from Bob Hope remind us how lame other comedians have been since. But then, that was one of Bob Hope's best moments they showed.

The opening film sketch was fun. The opening Hot Body Humping sketch on Jimmy Kimmel's After-the-Oscars show delivered, to bookend the night.

James Franco added little to the night, but Anne Hathaway was good, though not especially funny. More than usual, the hosts introduced the presenters and not much else. They are not comedians.

The show got past the more boring awards quickly, and bunched the songs and Best Picture segments, which avoided some of the more draggy elements of many shows. Still, the show ran a little over the 11:30 supposed ending time. The kids from PS 122 were good. It's always a thrill for kids to get special opportunities like that. Sometime in the next 50 years we'll read about some celebrity who was inspired by their visit to the Oscars tonight to sing in the chorus.

Big winner, of course was THE KING'S SPEECH: Here's how it fared...

The King’s Speech
==>Best Picture
==>Best Director - Tom Hooper
==>Best Actor - Colin Firth
xBest Supporting Actor - Geoffrey Rush
xBest Supporting Actress - Helena Bonham Carter
xBest Cinematography - Danny Cohen
==>Best Original Screenplay - David Seidler
xBest Art Direction
xBest Costume Design
xBest Original Score
xBest Film Editing
xBest Sound Mixing

Black Swan won Best Actress for Natalie Portman. Jimmy Kimmel remarked that Black Swan was the only black nominated this year.

Both Black Swan and The King's Speech were at HIFF (The Hamptons International Film Festival) in 2010, along with James Franco and 127 Hours.

Two of the best lines were

"How to Train Your Dragon".."that's disgusting!"

and

Tom Hooper's "LISTEN TO YOUR MOTHER!" - She discovered The King's Speech for him.

I thought both Natalie Portman's talk and Aaron Sorkin's talk were amazing: for how much they said, and how many people they remembered, and how fast they spoke, and what they said, too, in the pressure of the moment.

Natalie Portman, by the way, is not only an actress, she directed a short film that I liked a lot:

http://qporit.blogspot.com/2008/10/hiff-eve-gsa-shorts.html

I enjoyed Kirk Douglas' spirit as a presenter. Scarlett and Justin made a good team; they were the best presenting couple.

Did Christian Bale forget his wife's name when he was thanking???

Inception was the big winner in the technical categories, with Sound Editing and Mixing, Cinematography & Visual Effects. Alice in Wonderland won for Art Design and Costumes. And The Social Network won for Editing. You'd expect a Best Directed picture to win in some technical categories, but Speech was shut out.

I do not really understand why Barney's Version was even nominated for Costumes, by the way.

The Inside Job was the winning documentary. It describes the way that financial institutions, as well as some academic consultants, were complicit in the financial meltdown. The director was astonished that three years after no one has been sent to jail for fraud.

In a Better World was the Foreign Film winner. It is not easy to see the foreign film winners. They seem to pass unnoticed in the theaters, and even in film festivals. The shorts are kind of invisible also, but more and more they will be able to be searched out online I think.

There was one clip from Winter's Bone which reminded me how terrific that cinematography really was. To appreciate it, watch the DVD, then watch the How-it-was-made feature on the DVD. You'll see the difference between how the place really looks, and how it looks in the film.

Finally, sadly, was the remembrance of those that have passed during this year. Sadly, I had met and known a number of the people mentioned. Some of those I knew were very nice, and nice to me. May they and their families rest in peace. I will remember them fondly and sadly.

Here is a list of nominees and winners:

QUITE POSSIBLY OSCAR'S FINEST MOMENT

Posted on 8:20 PM by Unknown

In the 1830's during the forced relocation march known as "
The Trail Of Tears", many, many Native Americans died of starvation, exposure, exhaustion, disease and brutality.

In 1890, many Apaches (men, women and children) were
massacred at Wounded Knee Creek, South Dakota, by American troops.

Native Americans were swindled, robbed, double crossed, brutalized, forced to assimilate, relocated, dispossessed of their native lands, and murdered during the "
American Indian Wars." The Trail Of Tears and Wounded Knee are only two of many atrocities, distinguished by having names. The ultimate result of the campaigns against Native Americans was of course, the appropriation (ie theft) of their native land, and the suppression of any resistance or threat to the New Americans.

The Native Americans, who had a complex civilization in place as they were being crowded out by New Americans, fought back, and committed their own atrocities. Movies and television of the mid 1900's, when it told stories of the settling of the West, generally told the story only from the one point of view, that of the settlers, the New Americans, and portrayed the Indians as savages and murderers who committed unspeakable atrocities.

In February 1973, there was a memorial to the Indians who died at Wounded Knee, and a protest against the treatment of Native Americans, by the American Indian Movement at Wounded Knee.

In support of the general aims of the memorial protest at Wounded Knee, and in protest against the treatment of Indians in the movies, Marlon Brando, who had become interested in Indian Rights, declined his Best Actor award for The Godfather, and asked an American Indian activist,
Sacheen Littlefeather, who had Apache heritage, to decline the award for him at the ceremony.

The result of this shocking event at the Oscar ceremony was, in fact, that much more attention was paid to the situation of Native Americans, the terrible treatment they had gotten from the US Government, and the way they had been portrayed in movies.

Nevertheless, there has been a thread of derision directed at the event, and at the actress and activist, Sacheen Littlefeather, who declined the award for Brando.

Most recently, a few days ago, David Shuster -- who is usually quite reasonable -- in a segment about Oscar controversies, referred to Sacheen Littlefeather contemptuously as an actress who played an Indian to decline Brando's award.

I interviewed Sacheen Littlefeather about 30+ years ago, a few years after the Oscar event, when she acted in
The Trial of Billy Jack. She was a hard working, intelligent Native American, and an articulate spokeswoman for their issues, who was also a talented actress. She was beautiful in appearance, and lovely in personality.

The situation that Native Americans were in then, as she described them, and as described also by Gus Greymountain, another Native American I interviewed (from the same film), was appalling. The financial circumstances and the general health of Native American peoples at the time needed action.

Attention to the plight and situation of American Indians was sorely needed at the time Brando declined the Oscar and Sacheen rose to the podium at the Oscar Ceremony.

It was a dramatic moment and a courageous thing to do. Viewing a clip (below) of the event shows how difficult it was, and that she behaved with grace and eloquence.

The incident should not be belittled. It should be applauded.

It was quite possibly Oscar's finest moment, because it was in a significant way a turning point for advancing the rights of all Americans. It used the Oscar platform to speak out to make the world aware of an important humanitarian and cultural issue, related to movies yet bigger than just the movies -- just as the Oscar ceremony itself is somehow bigger than just a show about movie prizes, it is a show about the world's shared culture.

Here is a link to the clip of that moment:

THE 80TH ANNUAL ACADEMY AWARDS 2008 (WITH LIVE UPDATES DURING THE SHOW!!!)

Posted on 9:14 PM by Unknown

TILDA SWINTON as Karen Crowder and GEORGE CLOONEY as Michael Clayton
in Warner Bros. Pictures, Samuels Media and Castle Rock Entertainment’s drama
MICHAEL CLAYTON
Distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures.
Photo courtesy of Warner Bros. Pictures.

Tilda Swinton (Supporting Actress), and George Clooney (Actor)
along with Tony Gilroy (Director) and the film itself, were all nominated for Oscars!

Here, direct from the official Oscar (R) site, is the complete list of nominees.

The Broadcast is LIVE Sunday, February 24, 2008, beginning at 8:00 PM (NY Time), preceeded by the red carpet at 8:00, and the traditional Barbara Walters Special (interviews this year with Miley Cyrus, Ellen Page, Harrison Ford and Vanessa Williams) at 7:00.

First, just a few NOTES:

0 - LIVE UPDATES HERE DURING THE SHOW! WINNERS AND COMMENTS!

1 - TRY OUR NEW BLOG: YOUR BEST GUESS. YOU CAN ENTER YOUR GUESS FOR OSCAR WINNERS, YOU CAN COMMENT AND DISCUSS YOUR CHOICE, AND YOU CAN VOTE FOR YOUR CHOICE OF THE REALLY BEST PICTURE OF THE YEAR!

http://yourbestguess.blogspot.com/

2 more pre-show comments...

- Some things I really liked: ALL the music from AUGUST RUSH; the script (by Aaron Sorkin), direction (by Mike Nichols), and the performance (nominated!) of Philip Seymour Hoffman in "Charlie Wilson's War". (Hoffman also was great in Lumet's "Before The Devil Knows Your Dead," and he just won the Independent Spirit Award for The Savages.)

-War/Dance (nominated!) was a very interesting film!

- Surprising that Sweeney Todd was not nominated for Best Film or Best Director. Depp has a good shot at winning: singing actresses have won several times, so perhaps a singing actor.

- I saw on a pre-Oscar show a mention of the Sacheen Littlefeather - Marlon Brando episode. (Sacheen Littlefeather appeared on the Oscar telecast, representing Brando, to decline his Award because of how Hollywood has treated Native Americans.) I interviewed Sacheen Littlefeather some years ago. She is a beautiful, intelligent, sincere woman. It was courageous of her to go on the air. The event, while shocking to many, was a turning point in the attention given to Native Americans in films and Hollywood and America. She and other Native Americans, speaking out for redress of what was a terrible injustice (many injustices in fact) done to them by the United States, and the continuing problems that have evolved, have helped make considerable improvements. I found her an extremely impressive person, and she should be honored for her part in this effort!

- THINK/Film has two pictures in the Documentary category. It's an important company; a company to watch for important films!

LIVE SHOW: COMMENTS & WINNERS...

Jon Stewart's intro standup monolog was refreshingly simple & very funny!

The video clip montages have been fun!

Tilda Swinton was great. Funny and sincere!

No Country is on a roll with two big wins so far.

The program is moving very fast. Smooth. Not enough commercials to write these posts! Not too much tension though.

The song presentations have been underwhelming. Still... Amy Adams looks like she could be one of the coming big stars. Chenowith has a nice voice, and it was an althletic, amost dangerous song and dance. The orchestra accompaniment for ONCE probably cost more than the whole original movie.

Yes. There is a tendency for the Oscars to select singing actresses!

Kudos to the Academy & Jon Stewart for binging back Irglova after she was music-ed off. It was a beautiful talk she gave.

In memoriam is always so sad.

We lost what may be the most signigicant film creator ever. I believe Ingmar Bergman should have won the Nobel Prize in literature.

Very dignified, intelligent, funny, smooth-running show tonight. Only 18 minutes or so behind schedule. But no spectacular moments either.

Looking forward to next year!
