GLEESON AND VIKANDER FROM ANNA KARENINA

Posted on 6:24 PM by Unknown

Irish actor Domhnall Gleeson and Swedish actress Alicia Vikander were honored this year as two of The Variety 10 Top Actors to Watch, and they were both at the Hamptons International Film Festival (HIFF 2012).  Alicia with A ROYAL AFFAIR (an important film set in the 1700's about today's current politics), and Domhnall with SHADOW DANCER (a spy thriller).

As it happens, the two actors already knew each other before they came to the Hamptons, since they were on-screen lovers in ANNA KARENINA.

Here are some snapshots of Alicia and Domhnall from HIFF 2012.  Both actors are rising stars with great careers! Some links to their work are listed below after the pix.

Marin Ireland is one of the best and busiest actresses around. I managed to catch her at the 2012 Hamptons International Film Festival. (She starred in SPARROWS DANCE, plus two other films at HIFF!)

She had just come in the night before from LA where she was filming a TV pilot about a young lawyer at an Innocence-Project type of organization, and leaving the next day on her way to Pennsylvania for some final shots to wrap the project, then off to Yale Rep where she is (CURRENTLY!) starring as MARIE ANTOINETTE in an interesting new play. And then there's another film in the works. It's exhausting just to write about it, yet she looked fresh in the Hamptons, and chipper again when I saw her at Yale.

I spoke with Marin in a small space at HIFF where other interviews were also taking place, so it's just a bit too noisy, even after I softened some of the alien sounds, but I think Marin can be easily understood (though her voice sounds slightly tinnier than in life, since I had to filter out some of the bass to soften the voice of the guy talking behind me).

Marin talks about the film, the play, and some of her thoughts about acting in films and theater.

Marin has a phenomenal range: from films to theater; from experimental modern plays to Shakespeare. She is a very natural actress -- she seems to just make each character a part of herself -- or herself a part of each character. Her style (though not her appearance -- she is slight, not tall) reminds me strongly of Jill Clayburgh who also excelled at inhabiting her roles with a versatile naturalness and intense inner life.

SPARROWS DANCE is a sensitive film about an agoraphobic young woman. She won't leave her apartment, but when her toilet overflows the world's nicest plumber comes to fix it.

The actress, director and writer convey a feeling that they deeply understand her situation. They understand the plumber, too, and his relation to her. Paul Sparks gives a terrific performance. (I'm less convinced that they understand plumbing... The plumbing problems she had, and the repairs they seemed to be making, did not seem to make sense to me. But, then, it's a minor issue and I don't understand plumbing either.)

It's a small-scale, low budget, indie film... a very very good one and it leaves you with a satisfied feeling that you have understood something about the characters, about life and about love.

(Note to producers: market it for Valentine's Day.)

While SPARROWS DANCE is very simple and naturalistic -- albeit about a problem that is extra-ordinary enough to be interesting, MARIE ANTOINETTE, a new play at the Yale Rep is mannered in the extreme, about a Court that was mannered in the extreme.

In this production Marie appears at age 21 or so, with a valley girl accent, fashion obsessed. The opening tableau in fact is so original and spectacular it draws immediate applause.

It's not completely clear whether this accent is the creative team's specific impression/translation into English of young, somewhat ignorant, self-centered, light-headed Marie Antoinette’s poor Austrian accented French; or just a way of conveying a light-headed immature woman out of her depth.

Actually I don't think the production was aiming for historically detailed accuracy. So this is more of a generic Marie Antoinette in a story about discovering responsibility too late, and (since a major part of the story is The King, who's not up to the task) how a Kingdom can be lost for want of a King -- at least a King who can make the right decisions in a tough military and financial situation.

It is probably not a coincidence that this play was in fact written during the Bush years.

On the one hand, this play reminds me of CLOUD ATLAS, which in part deals with the relation between the leaders and the population; and even the BACCHAE, which (at least for me) is the story of a revolution by the subjects -- who consider themselves the real gods -- over a repressive regime; and, on the other hand, the recent A ROYAL AFFAIR which also deals with a similar period and a similar situation: a young woman trucked in (or carriaged in) across Europe in the mid 1700's, to marry a difficult and immature King, and the politics of governing.

At one point, Marie begins talking to a sheep (played by David Greenspan with a puppet/sheep-dummy). It is deliberately ambiguous -- the sheep could be an external metaphor for Marie's thoughts, or for the "polis" as in a Greek Chorus, or the playwright's voice, or absurdist theater, or an extra character that was needed when no human was available... or some combination of these... changing from scene to scene. These scenes were developed and experimented with extensively in rehearsal until they "worked". Even if we are not sure what The Sheep means, we do believe that The Sheep knows what he means, and so we can accept him.

Sofia Coppola and Kirsten Dunst had a much more sophisticated Marie. Yes, she arrived as a young girl, but she had more depth, and the debacle was less the result of royal incompetence in Sofia's film -- which was something of an "apologia" for Marie Antoinette -- than in Adjani's story, which was more of a condemnation of royal incompetence.

Marin fully embraced the vacant Marie Antoinette at the beginning and the desperate Marie at the end; both completely different from the self-inflicted blockage that characterized the agoraphobia in SPARROWS DANCE. All different, yet all Marin.

This Marie Antoinette was produced in cooperation with Diane Paulus' A. R. T. in Cambridge Mass, where there was an earlier production of Marie Antoinette with another lead actress.

Yale Rep is quite a wonderful place for interesting theater. It's only 90 minutes from NYC and worth the trip.

PRETENDING TO HELP PROGRAM @HAMPTONSFILM #HIFF12

Posted on 2:39 PM by Unknown

HERE'S A TWEET FROM
THE HAMPTON'S INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL
2012

HIFF Hamptons (@HamptonsFilm) August 21, 2012

Morning! We’re busy programming #HIFF12.
We have quite a few surprises in store so stay tuned!
What would u like 2 see at #HIFF12 this year?
—

Got that tweet from HIFF Hamptons (@HamptonsFilm) this morning so I started thinking about what I would like to see at HIFF this year.

PRETENDING
TO HELP PROGRAM HIFF12
THE HAMPTONS INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL 2012

(Note that HIFF is a terrific festival: compact, on-site, over the Columbus Day Weekend, with great films, great parties, and many opportunities to meet filmmakers. See the bottom of this article for links to earlier stories in QPORIT on earlier HIFF's).

I’ll take my role as amateur, volunteer, unpaid, unheeded(?) HIFF Programming “consultant” quite seriously, and suggest some ideas for the Hamptons International Film Festival 2012.

Note that I haven’t seen any of the films I’m mentioning; they are film’s I’d love to see at HIFF, not films I can “recommend”; I’m expressing an interest, based on the director, cast, and story, not making a recommendation.

First of all, I’d like to suggest some panels:

A – PANEL SUGGESTIONS

1 – WEB VIDEO PANEL

Short narrative films on the web are rapidly gaining in importance and quality. The web is a natural destination for this format (a format that has not had great traction in theaters since the invention of the feature film!) Comedy sites and webisodes enhance the prominence of web video.

HIFF itself posted a story recently about web video and online video festivals.

It would be interesting to have a program of the best web short narrative films, comedies and webisodes, followed by a panel discussing this new opportunity for filmmakers.

2 – 3D FILM AND VIDEO PANEL

Last year there were many feature films in 3D. The trend is continuing.

HIFF showed PINA in 3D.

There are also 3D consumer cameras. A new VR device (Oculus Rift) that made a big stir on KickStarter (raising over $1M is 24 hours) in an indication of continued development of improved 3D viewing outside of theaters.

It would be very interesting to have a panel discussing both feature films in 3D and consumer 3D filmmaking. The panel could discuss technical issues, creative quality issues, and projections for the future.

3 – FILMS OF CONFLICT AND RESOLUTION PANEL

It would be interesting to have a wide ranging discussion based on issues raised in this category of film presentations with filmmakers and public figures. It would be great also to have Angelina Jolie’s LAND OF BLOOD AND HONEY shown (out of competition) together, perhaps, with a retrospective of best films from previous years, related to this panel.

4 – BREAKTHROUGH FILMMAKERS PANEL

Like the panel with the Breakthrough Actors, it would be interesting to have a panel to meet Breakthrough Filmmakers, directors coming to HIFF early in their career.

Here are some other programming ideas:

B - INSTANT WEB VIDEO SCREENING ROOM

I am planning to videotape interviews – mostly in 3D – throughout the festival. Many journalists and many “civilians” attending HIFF will be taking pictures and videos of things they see, and their reactions.

Web video uploads are becoming ubiquitous.

It would be very interesting to have a (lightly curated!) channel on YouTube (and/or Google+) where videos could be uploaded and then have a screening room with a large screen monitor (3D I hope!) connected to a computer. The room would be monitored, and selections from the uploaded videos could be played continuously – either randomly, at the selection of the curator, or on demand by the audience.

Additionally, some events (eg Red Carpets) could be streamed live through Google+ Video Hangouts or other streaming services.

This room would also be the natural venue for a PROGRAM OF NARRATIVE WEB VIDEOS and for the WEB VIDEO PANEL and the 3D FILM AND VIDEO PANEL.

Note: The YouTube Channel, Google+ circle, twitter feed, etc would be visible publicly and externally. The screening room would make it possible and easy for HIFF attendees to view it conveniently on a large screen (and in 3D when the source is 3D) on site.

C – RISING STARS AND RISEN STARS

I do hope there will be many of the European Rising Stars at this year’s festival. It would be interesting, also, to have new films from Breakthrough Actors of previous years. Alba Rohrwacher is in one film mentioned below; Anais Demoustier has been in many fine films; Anamaria Marinca & Hannah Herzsprung (at HIFF twice!), Zrinka Cvitesic, etc are all having very interesting careers.

D - SOME FILMS I’VE HEARD ABOUT BY PEOPLE WITH GREAT TALENT:

(Note: I have no idea if the films in this next section are ready or available for the festival.)

Robin Singer and Mikal Evans were nicely paired in KISSES CHLOE shown recently at HIFF. They each have new projects I’d like to see. Robin has made a short film called POST. She’s currently starting an OOB run in Electra. She’s terrific and smart. Mikal appeared in GAME CHANGE and is in a new film HOW WE GOT AWAY WITH IT (so new it may not be finished). She’s also a great singer, with a new, exciting and interesting sound – Aside from her film, I’d love to hear her do a set at the OPENING NIGHT PARTY.

CERTAIN PEOPLE (aka KATINKAS KALAS) is a Swedish film shown at the Tribeca Film Festival, starring Mia Mountain. Mia is potentially (depending on the role) one of the most beautiful women around or one of the most tormented. I’ve seen her at a LAByrinth Theater event in a monologue she wrote, and she was powerful. She was nominated as a Rising Star in Sweden, and is currently in the cast of the (amazing) show, Sleep No More.

ANOTHER KIND (shown at the Woodstock Film Festival) is a low budget thriller by Jonathan Blitstein, a smart, energetic, ambitious producer/director/actor. Jonathan won a NYIT playwriting award recently for Keep Your Baggage With You, an OOB play at Theater For the New City.

Brit Marling was a breakout star at Sundance with ANOTHER EARTH (which she co-wrote and starred in). She’s articulate, with a fresh perspective on films and filmmaking. She’s in Robert Redford’s THE COMPANY YOU KEEP, ARBITRAGE with Richard Gere (which will probably be commercially released in September), and in THE EAST (which she also co-wrote) with Alexander Skarsgård, Ellen Page and Julia Ormond.

Actually, I was in a short film myself: Andrew Serban’s WEST SIDE GIRL, which has been in a number of festivals. It would be great fun to be able to interview (as a journalist) myself (as an actor) on the Red Carpet.

E - THE OPENING NIGHT PARTY

I have some thoughts about the Opening Night Party…

a) It should be a big enough venue to hold everyone (and their parked cars) comfortably. It should have a lot of good food that can be circulated easily. Gurney’s Inn was better than last year’s venue, but something needs to be done at Gurney’s Inn to provide more parking.

b) It should be possible to take pictures and video inside and outside throughout the evening. The Opening Night is the best opportunity for publicity for everyone – the filmmakers, the actors and the festival itself. There are more photographers there at the Opening Night Party, more interested in taking pictures, than on any other night. And, anything that comes out right away at the beginning of the festival helps the entire festival. (Last year, picture taking inside was not allowed.)

c) It would be nice to have an opportunity for filmmakers and actors to be introduced. Until their films have been shown, almost all the filmmakers are completely anonymous. It is hard to provide publicity for someone (or some film) you are interested in but have never met (and cannot recognize). An introduction event should not last long, but it could be very valuable both for actors and filmmakers that have come, and for the Press. (Indeed, it would also be a highlight and very valuable for Patrons/Founders who have paid a lot of money to come to a party with filmmakers, but have no clue who is actually there.)  It could be coupled – as I suggested above – with a short set from a great performer like Mikal Evans. (After this event everyone would return again to random partying – but people would know who they could approach to talk to.)

d) If filmmakers and actors had large name tags with the name of their film in large letters, that would also help both them and the Press (and the Patrons/Founders).

e) On Red Carpets (RC) it is usually difficult to identify the subject. It would be FANTASTIC if next to the Red Carpet there was a computer and someone took a baseline picture of each RC personality and posted it with their name and associated project next to the RC on the computer (and online) (I saw this done at an OOB awards event; it worked well and it was very, very helpful.)

F – FAREWELL PARTY

A casual buffet on the last day of the festival is a nice way to meet again with people you’ve seen during the festival, and find other people you’ve missed connecting with the last few days!

G – FILM AND FILMMAKER PROMOTIONS

One of the main reasons for films and filmmakers (including actors) to participate in a film festival is the promotional benefits they may obtain to further their commercial objectives (successful film run, more jobs, more money, etc).

To this end, it would help both the filmmakers and the press if every accepted film was strongly encouraged to provide, both online and in print, well before the festival begins, a press kit that includes:

  • PR contact.
  • Production company contact.
  • Filmmaker contacts
  • Many images to that could be used to accompany stories about the film and filmmakers
  • Short bios of all the filmmakers
  • Brief production notes and information

The printed Press Kit should be available in sufficient numbers and conveniently filed, so any request for a press kit can be simply and quickly fulfilled, through the end of the festival.

H – MORE PARKING

To make it easy for the audience to attend films, East Hampton and other towns showing films at HIFF should make more parking available, closer to the film venue, with more than a 1 hour limit.

Probably the easiest way to accomplish this – other than changing to a 3 hour time limit for everyone during HIFF -- would be to issue a parking pass along with every film ticket that hangs on the rear view mirror or lies under the front window and allows parking for, say, 30 min before the film through 45 min after.

I – FILMS I’D LIKE TO SEE AT HIFF -- EXCITING SOUNDING FILMS FROM RECENT FILM FESTIVALS –

(Again, I haven’t seen these; they just sound good from descriptions I’ve read in press reports from the festivals.)

An article in the NYT Style section on Mar 24, 2011 about the screening of MIRAL, directed by artist/director Julian Schnabel from a novel by Rula Jebreal -- an article which also described their new relationship -- sparked some interest. Here are some snapshots taken at the screening of MIRAL at the Hamptons International Film Festival (HIFF) in 2010.

ANTHOLOGY OF THE BEST SCIENCE BLOG STORIES

This is a printed (ie on paper made from dead trees) anthology.

You can nominate as many entries as you wish, written by you or others. Each needs to be originally published as a blog post between 12-01-09 and 12-01-10 to be eligible.

"We want to see entries that discuss all areas of science, nature, environment, technology, health and medicine, as well as “meta” topics ranging from the Life in Academia, to women/minorities in science, to the intersection between science and policy (and politics) or religion, to skepticism, to history, philosophy and sociology of science, to the analysis of the science publishing world or science communication/journalism, to personal stories by scientists, to patient stories by physicians/nurses (or patients)."

"The target audience of the anthology is lay audience. Actually, the target audience for the book is even more lay than the usual readers of science blogs. These books are supposed to be given as presents to your Mom, or your non-science friends, to show them both that science is cool and that there is great writing on blogs. So, when choosing which posts to enter, look for those that are gripping and exciting and also easy to understand by just about everyone."

HIFF 2010 WITH PARTY PIX & RED CARPET SNAPSHOTS!

Posted on 6:10 AM by Unknown

Alec Baldwin
At the Chairman's Party
Hamptons International Film Festival 2010
Alec Baldwin must be at least three people. He's announcing concerts, interviewing other actors onstage, and going to parties in the Hamptons.
And he was live (on 10/14) on 30 Rock, as well.

30 Rock Live was hilarious (10/14 8:30 NY time). I gather they did it again, live, for the West Coast -- That was Thursday, October 14, whatever time they do it live in California. (Hope you watched it!)

Alec Baldwin seems ubiquitous at HIFF... so he's at the top of this guide to stories about HIFF 2010. We'll be adding to this directory of articles as we process the photos and write the stories...

Here's some of what's still coming:
Interviews with Jane Goodall and others...Notes on films, including...=>Barney's Version
=>The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest
=>The Debt
=>Sweet Evil

Rula, the screenwriter (and author of the source novel) for MIRAL had the best line of the festival. A reporter (for a major magazine, though arguably less professional than the previous interviewer) asked Freida what she was wearing. Rula replied: "She's wearing me."

Stanley Tucci with young partygoers
At the Chairman's Reception

Stanley Tucci (first name only just seems wrong, here) was very friendly and approachable. Seems quite different from the characters he's played recently... OMG, he was acting.

Stanley (well, it still seems wrong but I'll do it anyway) directed LEND ME A TENOR last year on Broadway. He's currently developing MOMMY AND ME with Meryl Streep (Mommy) and Tina Fey (Me), which he is planning to direct. It will be the fifth film he has directed, the last being BLIND DATE in 2008.
Happy Birthday, Stanley! (He turns 50 on November 11.)

Robin will soon be seen in two comic web series, and Mikal performs solo and with her band frequently in New York. Her next show will be with the full band, November 11th, 9pm @RockwoodMusicHall. (Perhaps she'll sing Happy Birthday for Stanley Tucci? -- See previous item.)
